Project Description

06 Days
05 Nights

By 2050, a population of around 800 million people living in over 570 coastal cities will be facing the alarming reality of having to be relocated due to climate change. But where will they go?

Floating living is not exactly a new concept: people have been living in floating houses since the beginning of time. What has changed now is the scale, as the challenge is to create entire floating cities, with all the infrastructure of an urban center, all while being sustainable.

In this tour, you will discover the ideas and technology to make floating urban development a solution for the world’s densely populated waterfront cities that are facing real danger with rising sea levels and the accelerating impacts of climate change.

Are you ready to embark on an architectural journey that will broaden your horizons?

After breakfast, you will check out of your hotel and board your private transfer to head to Kinderdijk. Did you know that one-third of the Netherlands lies below sea level, with the lowest point being 22 feet (6.7 meters) below sea level? A UNESCO Heritage Site, the canals, mills, and pumping stations of Kinderdijk have kept the lands of Holland dry for over 700 years. you will have a boat tour followed by a visit to the insides of the museum mills, and discover the personal stories of the millers.

After the visit, you will head to Rotterdam and have lunch at a low-waste restaurant built in what used to be a floating pool. Free evening and overnight.

After breakfast, you will meet your guide and board your water taxi to explore the Port of Rotterdam, the largest seaport in Europe and the world’s largest seaport outside of East Asia. You will visit the world`s first floating dairy farm, cows included, and see how farming can be obtained even within a big city sustainably. You will also visit the Wilhelminapier.

Lunch stop at a sustainable craft brewery in the old fruit harbor.

In the afternoon, you will visit Rotterdam`s first floating street and lofts. As the city grows and with limited space on land, construction is moving to the water. In the Nassau Harbour, 18 lofts that exceed in sustainability are the first step to a new way of living.

You will also visit the first floating office, the Powerhouse Company. A climate-resistant floating building that is energy-positive and CO2-negative, it hosts the headquarters of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA).

At night, you will have a farewell dinner at the top of one of Rotterdam`s most iconic buildings: the Euromast, 185 meters high. With a panoramic view of the city`s skyline, this is the perfect place to end the trip in an impressive way.

Return to your hotel and overnight.
